Press Releases
Press Releases and Op-eds
Writing press releases is a fun challenge because they have to be lean, specific and informative. They are not intended to inspire warmth and a connection with the reader, but they don’t have to be bland or dry, either. Press releases are the vehicles through which the media will generate its own perception of an organization’s identity, so the messaging must be air-tight to avoid being misunderstood.
I have enjoyed exercising the different writing muscles required for media-specific content, and I have included some examples of my work below.
press release
This press release was written soon after the appointment of the current State Surgeon General by Governor Ron DeSantis. It served as his introduction to the reporters working the Florida health beat and laid the ideological groundwork for his priorities for the Florida Department of Health under his guidance.
op-ed
This op-ed was drafted as the opioid crisis was taking center stage in Florida and dominating the news cycle. It was written from the State Surgeon General to her colleagues and peers in the Florida Dental Association to caution against over-prescribing and was picked up by local, statewide and professional publications.
